In Saudi Arabia women have no sociopolitical rights aside from the right to vote, which will be allowed for the first time in 2015. Rape and domestic violence are treated as private matters and not criminal ones, women are not allowed to drive, must be covered in public at all times by their abaya, and as of November of last year Saudi women will now be monitored electronically so that they cannot leave the country without the permission of their male ‘guardian.’
“Under laws influenced by the strict Wahabi interpretation of Islam, women are not allowed to leave Saudi Arabia without permission from their male guardian (a husband, father or brother), who must give consent by signing what is known as the “yellow sheet” at the airport or border.” -Jennifer O’Mahony for the Telegraph.co.uk
Many people want to know why I am anti-religion, or why will not be ‘nice’ about other people’s beliefs, not just “live and let live,” it is because THIS is happening, right now and there is nothing, nothing that I can do about it except tell as many people as I can and hope that this type of oppression becomes unacceptable worldwide, which will most likely never happen anyway, unless perhaps the majority of people can just try to care about what is happening in the world that we share, to the people that we do not know in places that we do not understand. ‘Live and let live’? Certainly other people are not following that rule…certainly Saudi leaders using the excuse of the most powerful tool for control EVER: religion, to enslave their women are not ‘living and letting live.’
