“Dear Gun Owners,
I am a liberal, I am that “commie pinko fag” level liberal. I care deeply about things like equality and a fair playing field for all. I don’t like wars, I don’t like racism, I don’t like sexism, I don’t like global hunger, I believe in climate change and I don’t like the “Patriot Act”. I believe the military budget should be about 1/4 the size that it is. I don’t own a gun, won’t let one in my home, I think they are dangerous and am aware that violence in the home goes way up in homes that have guns. Math, numbers don’t lie. Just so we’re clear on where I am in general on this stuff.
Most of the people I know hold similar political views to mine. I live in one of the single most liberal cities in this country.
What you don’t seem to realize is that as a “liberal elitist” I would stand next to you any day of the week should there be some move to take away your guns. I would be on your side of the argument in a heartbeat if I thought our right to bear arms was abridged in any unconstitutional way, and I don’t even want to own a gun. And I can say that that is true for all of my friends too. I’m not a minority, I”m not gay, I’m not a woman however I will fight for each of them should they be wronged. I stand up for those who need it, for those groups to have the same shot as anyone else in this country. This includes you gun owners. You see the part you miss about liberals is we generally want things to be fair, even for those who are different than us.
Just because I CHOOSE not to own a gun, doesn’t mean that I expect any other human on the planet to make the same choice that I have made, it is a choice we each need to make. When gun advocates start screaming that they will begin killing people if the President signs an executive order about guns, when they scream at a talking head, when they compare the Secret Service protection our country provides to the first family to armed guards in school, they sound like lunatic fringe level crazy. This hurts you, a lot.
Look there are no black helicopter riding, gun snatching federal agents on the horizon, the left hates that idea as much as you do, we actually got your back on that one. Haven’t you heard us grip and moan about Guantanamo, Patriot Act and the drone war? So my request is please to stop being mad about some made up fairy dust rainbow riding unicorn stuff and talk with us like fellow Americans. We want to have a conversation, we want a safer more sane America than the “murder incorporated” that it is today. We need your voice in that conversation, an adult conversation grounded in reality and facts, not paranoid delusional rants.
Nobody wants your guns, we just don’t want people to shoot us with them.”
